REMEMBER: Next week there is NO CLASS on November 11. It is Veterans Day, and the Library will be closed.
Monday November 4
We will review "Renting an Apartment" reading and exercises.
Grammar: I will introduce "Count"and "non-count" nouns.
HOMEWORK
Count nouns are things you can count. E.g. I have six chairs in my apartment. There are four students from China in my class. I usually buy 2-3 apples each time I go to the supermarket.
Non-count nouns are things which are more difficult to count, such as coffee, rice, furniture, and beer. I need to get some rice next time I go to the store. Or: "The furniture in my apartment is old, but it still looks good and is very comfortable."
Some nouns can be count and non-count. Example: "Would you like to have some tea?" (non count), or "My local Starbucks has several different teas, such as orange pekoe and Earl Grey. (count).
Please also pay attention to the use of fewer and less. We usually use fewer with count nouns (fewer students in the class this semester) and less with non count nouns "I drink less coffee than I used to".

Here is an example that I wrote, titled: My First Home. This might give you some ideas as to how you might arrange your story.

2. Think about the following statement: "It is better to live alone than with other members of the family, such as parents and grandparents." Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Why? Why not?
3. "Why I like my home". Write a short story about why you like (or dislike) the home you live in now.
Some reasons might be: Is the neighborhood safe? Is it noisy? Do you like your neighbors? Are you too far from the subway? PLEASE WRITE ABOUT YOUR OWN REASONS FOR LIKING OR DISLIKING YOUR HOME OR APARTMENT.
